The Pitfalls of asking social media for recommendations.

It's a real danger, and we hear all the horror stories in the Wedding Industry!

So, you are planning to celebrate your wedding on the Costa del Sol (or any destination wedding location), and are navigating the minefield, finding the right venue, checking out local suppliers, hotels, villas, etc etc. Next, you hop onto Facebook, find groups local to where your destination wedding may be and start to ask the "locals" for recommendations and advice. Congratulations! You have just made the biggest mistake of your life, you will now be ultra-confused and at risk of being another one of those horror stories we hear on a regular basis! If you are planning a destination wedding and value your sanity (and money), this article might save your Wedding!

The moment you put up that post requesting advice or a particular supplier, you are inundated with a deluge of responses; everyone has an opinion, everyone is recommending people and more than half the time they are all wrong! Marbella Bride see this all the time and in fact, we don't respond to Social meda posts at all, but we do see what goes on!

Before I go on, I cannot understate how important it is to hire a knowledgeable local wedding planner, especially when embarking on a destination wedding! Yes, there may be an extra expense in the first place, but in the long run, it could actually save you money, it will certainly save you stress and it may just save your wedding altogether!

In the world of social media, all it not what it seems! Don't be another one of the horror stories we hear all too often in the wedding industry in Spain.

You Rarely Know Who Is Giving the Advice!

In most wedding groups, anyone can comment — past brides, future brides, suppliers, friends of suppliers, or people with no direct experience at all. Very few comments include full context:

  • Was the wedding similar to yours in size, style, or budget?
  • Was the supplier used recently or many years ago?
  • Was the recommendation based on one interaction or long-term service?
  • Is the supplier a real business / actually legal?
  •
  • Without knowing the background of the person giving advice, it’s difficult to judge how relevant or reliable their recommendation truly is. You can waste a lot of time following leads that go nowhere, or you can risk booking unprofessional, unreliable or even Illegal services! Many suppliers actively monitor wedding groups and respond quickly to recommendation requests, sometimes openly, sometimes under the guise of a “happy past client.” This isn’t always obvious to couples, especially those unfamiliar with the local wedding industry. Even Popularity in a group doesn’t always equal quality, professionalism, or compatibility.

One Person’s Perfect Supplier May Be Wrong for You

Destination weddings are highly personal. A supplier who worked perfectly for one couple may be a poor fit for another due to:

  • Language barriers
  • Cultural expectations
  • Communication style
  • Wedding size or complexity
  • Legality or logistical requirements in another country
  •
  • Social media recommendations rarely account for these nuances. What worked beautifully for someone else may cause stress or disappointment in a different scenario. Not only that, but did you know there are literally hundreds of Illegal suppliers working on the Costa del Sol? It's most likely the same for many destinations. Some suppliers are not registered with the authorities, or are not legally entitled to work in Spain, even if they tell you they are! They may sound genuine, they may even have pretty websites or social media, but once booked, you don't have a leg to stand on if they don't turn up, or provide you with a substandard service! Some venues may even reject these suppliers, unless they have the correct paperwork! Imagine your Photographer or Band being refused access to your wedding venue on the day!

Always seek the advice of a local wedding planner when embarking on a destination wedding, not "Karen" from Facebook (no offence intended to any Karen's out there)! We promise you it's worth every penny!

Lack of Accountability and Follow-Up

When something goes wrong with a supplier found via a social media group, there is usually no real accountability:

  • Group admins are not responsible
  • The person who recommended them disappears
  • Negative follow-ups are often deleted or discouraged

Destination Weddings Require Real Local Knowledge, Not Just Opinions

Local regulations, venue restrictions, weather patterns, noise laws, licensing requirements, and seasonal availability vary widely between destinations. The folk on Social media groups often provide opinions, not verified local knowledge. In almost all deluges of responses to a post there are many opinions that are just totally wrong!

A destination wedding specialist or established local wedding planner understands:

  • Which suppliers are legally compliant
  • Who works well at specific wedding venues
  • Who consistently delivers reliability and good service
  • Who works well together!
  •
  • This level of insight is difficult to crowdsource accurately. Facebook responses can cause you a lot of wasted time and confusion! We cannot stress how important it is to hire a professional planner to help you avoid the pitfalls!

Overwhelmed and with Decision Paralysis

Asking for recommendations on Social Media often results in:

  • Dozens of conflicting comments
  • Long lists of names and tags with no clear direction
  • Increased anxiety rather than confidence
  •
  • Instead of narrowing options, couples often end up more unsure than when they started! Don't become another horror story!
  • Rather than relying on open social media groups, couples planning a destination wedding benefit most from:

  • Trusted local wedding planners
  • Curated supplier lists based on real experience
  • Transparent recommendations tailored to their wedding style and needs
  • Professionals who work regularly in the destination can recommend suppliers not because they are popular online, but because they are reliable, experienced, and suitable for your specific wedding.

  • Social media groups can be useful for inspiration and community support, but they are not a substitute for professional, destination-specific guidance. When it comes to one of the most important days of your life, decisions based on experience, accountability, and local knowledge will always outperform crowd-sourced opinions.

  • Don't just become another horror story!

  • Steer clear from planning your destination wedding alone and stop using social media to do it! It's a magical day in your life, hire a professional to help you make it magical! In short, please don't mess it up!
